Special Magnesia Award for Adolf Knoll
On April 17, 2023, Adolf Knoll, Deputy Director for Science, Research and International Relations of the National Library of the CR, received the special Magnesia Award for the Contribution to Book Culture. The Magnesia Litera award ceremony took place at the New Stage of the National Theatre, Prague.
Adolf Knoll was awarded the prize for the development of digitization of manuscripts, early printed books and newspapers, and their wide accessibility to both specialists and the public.
He is a co-author of the first data format for digitized manuscripts, early printed books and periodicals (recommended by UNESCO in 1999), and the author of comprehensive XML based data format for digitized periodicals and modern monographs, which became the basis for the development of the Kramerius digital library (2003). He co-operated on a number of pilot projects of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme, and is a co-author of the UNESCO and FAO online manual on digitization. He is a member of the Manuscriptorium Digital Library development team.
Thanks to him the National Library of the CR has been involved since 2011 in the Google project of digitization of early printed books. He is the expert guarantor of the VISK 6 Grant Programme of the Ministry of Culture of the CR focused on digitization of manuscripts and early printed books. Since 2011, he has been responsible for coordination of the institutional research in the National Library of the CR.
