Library Acquisition Division

General characteristics

The Division ensures systematic development of the National Archival Collection, the Universal Library Collection, the Study Collection and of the Special (Non-Printed) Documents Collection in accordance with an application of the international method/methodology Conspectus.

It co-ordinates collection development within the institution.

The subject of acquisition are both inland and foreign non-periodical documents distributed on material carriers.

Current bohemical documents are acquired in their entirety both as for their scope and type based on the legal deposit. Acquired are also additional copies of current inland literature and retrospectively bohemical desiderata.

Current foreign documents are acquired in a selective way. Individual titles of foreign periodicals are acquired through exchange of publications.

The Division is responsible for primary, i.e. accessions registration of acquired documents.

Goals of inland literature acquisition

To be able to fulfill the function of a national library in a wide international context acquisition supports development of the collection of the national output (current and formerly published) in maximal entirety for conservation purposes and also as a basis for supprting the universal availability of bohemical production.

To be able to fulfill the function of universal research and study library satisfying the needs of universities, research and special workplaces mainly in the social and natural sciences, culture and art are acquired. In accordance with the general definition of a user of the NL CR professional needs of graduated users (mainly scholars in science, reasearch and education) or undergraduates in main university study subjects which need advanced literature are followed. Acqusition here depends on aquiring additional copies for study purposes.

Goals of foreign literature acquisition

To be able to fulfill the function of universal research and study library acquisition support the supply of documents satisfying the needs of universities, research and special workplaces in a selective way mainly in the social and natural sciences, culture and art. In accordance with the general definition of a user of the NL CR professional needs of graduated users (mainly scholars in science, research and education) or undergraduates in main university study subjects which need advanced literature are followed. In acquisition is applied the principle of a unique copy with the exception of encyclopaedias and dictionaries/vocabularies. Systematic retrospective acquisition is not supposed.

To be able to support the function of a national library foreign bohemical literature is acquired in a selective way.
