Novokarolinská knihovna Praha 1656–[1777] (The New Caroline Library Prague 1656–[1777]): The holding includes a fraction of writings of the original registry. The most important part of it consists of written documents testifying to the increase of book collections by donations (e.g. the Sternberg library collections, the legacy of Jan František Löw and that of Jan Nepomuk Michal Dörfelmayer), by purchase, and by obtaining from the Censor´s Commission. Other documents concern, on the one hand, organisation of the collections (e.g. a proposal of the arrangement of books and their cataloguing, a catalogue of theological books, sorting out of duplicates), and on the other hand, personnel matters. Veřejná a universitní knihovna Praha (1522)1777–1918(1919) (Public and University Library, Prague (1522)1777–1918(1919)): At the suggestion of Count Francis Joseph Kinski, Empress Maria Theresa decided to issue a decree on 25th January 1777, establishing a university library in Prague by uniting four libraries until then independent. Each of the libraries underwent its own development concerning both the origin of holdings and their cataloguing. Different was also the purpose which they served. They were the Klementinum Jesuit library (part of which was the Old Caroline library), libraries of the dissolved Jesuit colleges and residences, New Caroline Library housed in Carolinum, and the libraries of Kinski family (their family, personal, and military libraries). The institution was given the name of Imperial and Royal University Library in Prague (the name valid until 1887, when it was changed into Imperial and Royal Public and University Library). Its first director became Francis Joseph Kinski, who was changed by Count Věžník, the Directpr of Study Court Commission in Vienna, at the time. In 1780, Karel Rafael Ungar started to work in the library as a custodian. When the position of the director was cancelled in 1784, the competences went on the custodian, who as the librarian (biliotékář in Czech) stood at the head of the library from then.
The holding includes 138 official books, 12 postal protocols, 10 indexes, 1 card catalogue, 3 special folders, 1 special box, and 105 cartons of written material. Written documents of the holding represent a basic and irreplaceable source especially for the history of University library from its establishing in 1777 until 1918, or rather until the first half of 1918, and for the history of librarianship in Bohemia as well. They also provide a lot of information about the development of learning and general Czech cultural history.
The holding is accessible through an inventory; in addition, the numbered documents up to 1826 and the documents not numbered, divided into subject groups have made a detailed card catalogue of individual documents.
Národní a universitní knihovna v Praze (1916)1918–1958(1959) (The National and University Library Prague (1916)1918–1958(1959)): It includes archival materials from the period between 1918 and 1958. The holding is divided into two manipulation periods. Written documents from 1918 to 1946 are arranged according to years and reference numbers. They are accessible through a subject card catalogue completed in the original National and University Library registry. Documents with dates but without numbers are included into Sundries files of individual years, documents missing both date and reference number are included as a Sundries file at the end of the whole collection. Materials from the period between 1947 and 1958 will be classified into subject groups, e.g. protection and preservation of holdings, bibliographic work, international relations, exhibitions, reconstruction of the library, confiscation of German and collaborationists´ libraries, documents transported from other institutions, and distribution.
Some documents from the period of 1918–1945 are recorded in the List of Documents of the Public and University Library of 1975.
Státní knihovna ČSR Praha (1954)1958–1990 (The State Library of the Czech Socialist Republic Prague (1954)1958–1990): The holding includes documents concerning different fields of the Library´s activity, e.g. the history of the Library, its methodical activity as the central library of the Uniform System of Libraries, international cooperation, bibliographic work, exhibitions and cultural and educational events, accessions and the protection and storage of the holdings, ideological purge of libraries after 1968, permits to export books abroad, projects of new library buildings, etc. The holding is not complete, other materials originating in this period are taken over continuously. At present, the materials are classified according to the library organizational structure and then gradually filed. Provisional orientation is possible through a card catalogue, the classified parts are accessible through provisional inventory lists and a partial inventory.
Národní knihovna ČR Praha (1985)1990– (The National Library of the Czech Republic Prague (1985)1990–): The holding is open, which means that further written material is continuously added. It will be gradually built on the basis of a plan of documents.
Katalogy a kartotéky [1829]– (Catalogues and card indexes [1829]–): It consits of a name catalogue in the form of a book, a catalogue of incunabula, a catalogue of the Prague Lobkowicz family, a catalogue of rare printed books, a systematic catalogue of entries, a catalogue of manuscripts, the Truhlář´s card catalogue of manuscripts + index of persons and places and subject index, a stocktaking card catalogue of the sections I–XII, a special catalogue of Libri bohemici, inventory of firstprints of the Augustinian Monastery at St Thomas, Prague, a catalogue of a library of the German Secondary School, Prague, Na Příkopě Street. Kinský František Josef – ředitel VUK (1739)1766–1793(1828) (Kinský František Josef - the Director of the Public and University Library (1739)1766–1793(1828)): The holding consists of one carton, in which the documents are arranged into subject groups: Private (1739)1766–1787(1828), Library 1776–[1781], University 1775–[1781], and Folders [1781]–1793; within these groups, they are ordered chronologically. The written documents concern the beginnings of the Public and University Library, Czech science, University, social problems (it is interesting to read the proposed solution of the social question of beggers), military school system. The holding is accessible through an inventory and a card catalogue.
Mapy a plány [1782]– (Maps and plans [1782]–): Plans of the Klementinum and other buildings in possession of the library, reconstruction of the Klementinum by the architect L. Machoň, projects of a new library building, technical drawings of interior equipment. The documents have been classified but no inventories or catalogues have been made yet.
Osobní spisy [1920]–1998 (Personal Files [1920]–1998): Personal files of former members of library staff. Card catalogues of applicants for work in the National University Library, staff members, the advancements on salary scale, and correspondence concerning personal matters. Accesibility of the collection is restricted in accordance with the law on protection of personal data.
Výroční zprávy 1870– (Annual reports 1870–): Annual reports on the activities, work and run of the library (work of individual departments, accessions, decrease in number of units, stocktaking, condition of the collections, readers, construction adaptations etc.) and personnel matters (work classification and salary scale, publishing activity, holidays, sickness rate. The holding is accessible through an inventory.
Archiv města Tábor 1551–1667 (The Archive of the City of Tábor 1551–1667): A torso of documents of the municipal registry containing court and legal documents (feuds, verdicts, testaments) and two documents concerning municipal affairs in general (contributions, the renewal of councillors). The holding is kept in one carton and it is accessible through the inventory.
Cech kožešníků Enns, Rakousko 1614–1836 (The Enns Furrier´s Guild, Austria 1614–1836): The holding provides a lot of important information for both the history of Furriers´ Guild in Enns and other Upper Austrian cities and the development of guilds´ establishment generally. Apart from common correspondence concerning the acceptance of journeymen and their obligatory practice, warrants, certificates and letters, various reports, references, receipts and similar documents, the holding includes principal documents concerninf the furriers´ guild in Enns and Stevr, i.e. the furriers´ rules and regulations and their copies (e.g. a request for the confirmation of the rules dated of 1478, a copy of the guild´s rules of 1609); it also contains the rules of furriers´ guilds of whole Austria (e.g. a copy of the patent from 1718 extending the existing Austrian furriers´ rules). The holding also includes documents concerning the close cooperation with furriers from the seven mentioned Upper Austrian and other Austrian cities, trade connections with butchers, alum tanners, and drapers, for instance also from Bratislava, participation in markets, prices of products, various disputes among the individual members of guilds as well as among the guilds of different cities. Interesting are also the records and information from joint meetings, e.g. of all furriers from Austria noth of Enns (Upper Austria), various agreements, contracts etc. Worthy of mention for the history of school and professional education are the preserved exam questions for the journeymen acceptance into guilds and several certificates of journeymen. In the field of teaching and training apprentices, the furriers in Enns even cooperated with the furrier masters in Kaplice, Bohemia. The preserved annual accounts of furriers allow to get acquainted with the social situation of furriers in Enns, namely through the records of providing supports to poor furrier masters etc. The holding is kept in one carton and is accessible through an inventory.
Cenzor a revizor židovských knih, tisků a rukopisů Praha 1700–1843 (The Censor and Reviser of Jewish Books, Prints, and Manuscripts Prague 1700–1843): It consists of two cartons of documents from the period between 1700 and [1842] and five postal registers dated between 1834 and 1843. The holding includes censors´files in German, Hebrew texts that censors translated on account of their office or that were sent to them, and various Hebrew and German notes and lists of words for prepared dictionaries and grammars. It contains records of various customs, religious ceremonies, marriage settlements and purchase agreements, testaments and inscriptions on gravestones etc. The records also concern economic circumstances, commercial negotiations, allocation of Jewish communities and their representatives. There are to be found also Jewish songs, poetry, prayers, and proverbs. The holding is accessible through an inventory, the German language documents have completed a card catalogue.
Československo-švédská společnost Praha 1929–1939 (The Czechoslovak and Swedish Society Prague 1929–1939): The Czechoslovak and Swedish Society was founded in 1929. Its task was to cultivate and deepen mutual relations between Czechoslovakia and Sweden, „namely in the spheres of science, literature, arts, tourism, and state economy". Československý ústav bibliografický při VUK Praha 1919–1925 (The Czechoslovak Bibliographic Institute affiliated to the Public and University Library Prague 1919–1925): The documents are arranged in chronological order and according to the reference numbers. Svobodní zednáři Chojnice, Polsko 1810–1819 (Freemasons of Chojnice, Poland 1810-1819) Documents of the Provincial Masonic Lodge of Chojnice (former Conitz, Prussia, today´s Poland) Friedrich zur wahren Freundschaft im Orient. The holding includes both received and sent off correspondence of the Lodge kept by Grand Master Christian Friedrich Rotzoll, a provincial tax collector. Sbírka archiválií 1564–1956 (A Collection of Archival Materials 1564–1956): Four cartons of various written documents that are not directly related to the library but are interesting from the historical or other point of view, e.g. instructions for a supervisor /komisaře in Czech/ of repairs of the roof of St Vitus Church dated of 1660, letters of teachers of the Church of Bohemian Brethren, Berlin, to the Moravian Brethren dated of 1781, a sheet from the land tax register of the Reichenegg village in the Cilliz region from the 19th c., photographs documenting activities of the National Social Educational Club /in Czech Národně sociální vzdělávací beseda / of J.V. Sbírka J. A. Neumanna 1546–1909 (A Collection of J. A. Neumann 1546–1909): Originally, a collection of autographs; apart from them, it contains also a number of documents concerning individual personalities, e.g. ecclesiastical dignitaries, rulers, and noblemen from various European countries, scholars, scientists, soldiers, artists etc. It also includes several separate documents that are very interesting, e.g. guild rules and a number of cut out signatures of different people. Sbírka Velká francouzská revoluce 1787–1804 (A Collection of the Great French Revolution 1787–1804): a file of copies containing reports of an executive commissioner of the municipality of the Nouvelle église Canton, occasional prints on political themes from the period of the Great French Revolution, e.g. ordinances, notices, manifestoes, appeals, decrees, discussions, letters, poems etc., six numbers of L’Ambigu, French newspapers published in London, and several personal documents. Rodinný archiv Veselých [1795]–1947 (The Veselý Family Archive [1795]–1947): The holding was put together by two members of the family - knight Carl von Wessely and Otakar Veselý. One carton of documents contains family correspondence, originals and copies of personal documents (school reports, study certificates and professional advancement certificates, baptismal certificates, extracts from the register), a description of the coat-of-arms, drawings etc. Classified, not yet dealt with.
Rodinný archiv Feketů Galánthai, Uhry (1612)1728–1824(1875) (The Fekete Galánthai family Archives, Hungary (1612)1728–1824)1875)): The holding includes mainly the correspondence of the last three members of the Hungarian noble family coming from Transylvania - György Fekete, his son János, a poet and translator who kept correspondence with Voltair, and grandson Ferenc. It captures the period of decline of the family, shows the relations among its individual members, their correspondence reflects not only financial problems of the family but also social, political and military situation of the period, they lived in. Beneš František Xaver Josef 1839–1887
František Xaver Josef Beneš (1820–1888), a Czech archeologist, imperial and royal restorer for the Region of the town of Čáslav (1854), administrator of museum collections of the Archeological Division of the Museum of the Kingdom of Bohemia, restorer of the Towns of Prague (1872), and member of the Unity of St. Vitus (1866). A collection of twelve letters (one is incomplete) addressed to Beneš by various writers. Not yet dealt with.
Bruch-Sinn Caroline 1880–1903[1939]
Caroline Bruch-Sinn (1853–1911), a German writer born in Olomouc and writing in German. A sheaf of letters from Theresa von Hansgirgová, Heinrich Landesmann (Hieronymus Lorm), Marie Landesmannová, Heinrich Moritz Penn, Eduard Maria Schranka and Carl Weisse, all addressed to Bruch-Sinnová. The holding is kept in one carton and is accessible through an inventory.
Cejpek Jiří, Prof. PhDr., CSc. 1945–2004
Prof. PhDr. Jiří Cejpek, CSc. (*20 February 1928, †December 2004), a librarian, profesor of Charles University. Heritage, not dealt yet.
Fleischner Jindřich, Ing. 1905–1922:
Ing. Jindřich Fleischner (1879–1922) graduated at the Technical College (Vysoká škola technická in Czech) in chemistry. Apart from his professional activity, he was also concerned with the questions of economy and technology and social theory. As an outstanding Czech sociologist promoting the theory of Wilhelm Ostwald, he tried to project both cultural and philosophical and moral aspects into technical work. He also translated from French (Anatol France, Adré Gide, and the Belgian Maurice Maeterlinck), and from German (J. W. Goethe). After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, he was appointed a Ministerial Councillor at the Ministry of Public Works. Four cartons of written documents contain letters, translations, manuscripts of books, articles and lectures. The holding is accessible through an inventory and a card catalogue.
Grégr Prokop 1902–1914:
Prokop Grégr (1868–1926), a doctor, editor-in-chief and publisher of Národní listy (up to 1920), member of the Czech National Council (Národní rada česká), and state inspector for health resorts. The holding includes documents from three fields of Grégr´s activities: 1/ Editorial office of Národní Listy (1902–1907), 2/ Czech National Council (1903-1909), 3/ Fund of Disposal (´Dispoziční fond´ in Czech; 1903-1914). It is kept in one carton and classified according to the subjects; not yet filed.
Hansgirg Karl Victor, von 1863–1870:
The knight Karl Victor von Hansgirg (1823–1877), a German poet, living in Bohemia and writing in German, and public servant.
The holding contains twenty-nine letters from the period 1863-1870, written by Hansgirg to Vilemína Hornová, née Jenčíková z Ježové, a widow of German writer Uff Daniel Horn (1817-1860). The holding is kept in one carton and is accessible through an inventory.
Hoeff-Huerta Martin, de 1617–1637:
Martin de Hoeff-Huerta (2nd half of the 16th c.– 1637), an Austrian general of Dutch origin. Since 1628 the owner of the Velhartice estates.
One carton of written documents concerning financial and monetary matters (in connection with the so-called kalada, i.e. bankruptcy caused by a special monetary situation in Bohemia in the 1620s, debts and their recovery, legal actions) and testimonies of relatives. Chyba Karel [1945]–[1986]:
Karel Chyba (1918–1995), a librarian, author of the Slovník knihtiskařů v Československu od vzniku knihtisku až po rok 1860 (The Bibliographic Dictionary of Bookprinters in Czechoslovakia from the Beginning of Bookprinting up to 1860). Between 1945 and 1986, he was a member of library staff, working in the Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books. The holding includes a catalogue of Czech and foreign printers, excerpts of literature from various branches. Classified but not yet filed.
Kleinschnitzová Flora, doc. PhDr. 1929–1946:
Doc. PhDr. Flora Kleinschnitzová (1891–1946), a senior lecturer in literary history, Charles University, journalist, translator, head of the Manuscript Department of the Public and University (later National and University) Library in Prague. She was mainly interested in Slovak and later also in Swedish literature. The preserved written documents of the extent of one carton concern exactly the Kleinschnitzová´s activities in the field of Czechoslovak and Swedish relations. The carton contains documents of The Scandinavian and Dutch Institute, above all the correspondence with PhDr. Oldřich Heidrich, the Secretary of the aforementioned Institute, The Statutes of the Czechoslovak and Swedish Society, press cuttings, personal notes etc. The holding is accessible through an inventory list and a card catalogue.
Landsteiner Karl – Naaf Anton August – Rank Josef 1879–1904
Karl Landsteiner (*30 August 1835, †3 April 1909), pseud. Arthur Landerstein, an Austrian priest, teacher and ethnograph; Anton August Naaf (*28 November 1850, †27 December 1918), a German writer, poet and journalist born in Bohemia and writing in German; Josef Rank (*10 June 1816, †27 March 1896), pseud. J. K. Willibald, a German writer and journalist born in Bohemia and writing in German. A fragment of documents includes mainly manuscripts of minor works. Ludwig Alfred 1856–1884
Alfred Ludwig (1832–1912), a German philologist, linguist and Indologist; from 1860, an associate professor of classical philology and comparative linguistics at Prague University (after the University had been divided, he remained at German University); from 1871, a professor of comparative linguistics at German University; 1877 a full member of the Royal Czech Society of Sciences; 1899 a foreign member of the Vienna Academy. The holding contains a collection of Ludwig´s letters, addressed to his friend Vojtěch Šafařík, and a photograph of Pavel Josef Šafařík from 1856. It is kept in one carton and it is accessible through an inventory.
Máchová-Kostelecká Karla [1890]–1917
The teacher Karla Máchová-Kostelecká (1853–1920) was a notable member of the Social Democratic Party, in 1908, she stood out as a candidate for this Party in the Land Assembly. As one of the outstanding proponents of women´s movement, she struggled for women´s suffrage. She was involved in the field of education of women and schools for women. She was a co-founder of the magazine Ženský list (Women´s Paper) and she was its editor between 1904 and 1914.
The holding consists of one carton of her manuscript lectures and articles concerning the social democratic women´s movement, women´s suffrage, assurance for housemaids, protection of mothers and children, women´s movement and life of clubs and societies in America, educational system and public people´s libraries in Scotland. It also includes her speech, she delivered as a candidate to the Czech Parliament in 1908. The holding is accessible through an inventory and a card catalogue.

Alfred Meissner [1872]–1885, a German poet, playwright, and novelist living in Bohemia and writing in German. He belonged to the circle of the literary movement Mladé Německo (Young Germany).
The holding consists of one carton with his letters addressed probably to J. Huschak to Vienna. The letters come from the period of the end of his life, which he spent in Bregenz, Austria, where he also died. The holding is accessible through an inventory.
Neumann Jan Antonín 1862–1907
Jan Antonín Neumann, a trader in Chrudim, living then in Fünfhaus near Vienna, and from the 1870s / 1880s in Prague. He built up a collection of historical documents that is kept in the National Library Archives.
The personal collection includes both commercial and private correspondence of J. A. Neumann (e.g. with Mrs. Josefa Náprstková about the Neumann´s collection, or with Jindřich Ressel, a son of Josef Ressel, about a monument to his father), account documents (trade, taxes, seizures etc.), and documents concerning various matters (e.g. the construction of the Petřín Lookout Tower). It is kept in one carton and it is accessible through an inventory.
Pihertová Ludmila Viktorie, PhDr. 1913–1940
PhDr. Ludmila Pihertová (1890–1945), a superintendent of the Public and University (later National and University) Library, Prague. One carton of written documents contains, above all, letters of invitation to various cultural events of the 1930s and several personal documents of L. A personal holding of JUDr. Jaroslav Preiss (1870-1946), a notable Czech lawyer, financier and economist, and his second wife Jarmila Dimmerová, neé Šimáčková. The holding consists of three cartons of documents of household accounting, those concerning the matters of the Lavičky large estate, private and official correspondence (a lawsuit, inheritance proceedings), various personal documents and certificates, photographs, architectural plans etc. The holding is classified according to the subjects and is accessible through a card catalogue and an inventory.
Teuchert Karl 1816–1861
Karl Teuchert, a teacher from Kralupy nad Vltavou. One carton of written documents including an oratorio, a theatre play, poetry, and correspondence. Classified chronologically, not yet filed.
Urbánková Emma, PhDr. [1909]–[1992]
PhDr. Emma Urbánková (1909–1992), a codicologist and eminent specialist in cataloguing incunables, author of many professional essays about incunables printed on the territory of Bohemia and Moravia. In 1933, she started work in the Public and University Library, first in the Department of Foreign-Language Cataloguing. One year later, she transferred to the Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books, where she worked until 1992; between 1945 and 1979, she was the head of the department in question. Not yet dealt with.
Urmann Heinrich 1937–1944
Heinrich Urmann (1909–?), a German tax inspector from the town of Aš. Copies of personal documents (baptismal certificates, marriage certificates, school reports), family correspondence, official correspondence (bank, German technical schools), and sundries file (a chequebook, clothes stamps, postal receipts etc.). Wehmer Carl, Prof. PhDr. 1924-1945
Prof. PhDr. Carl Wehmer (1903–1978), a German palaeographer and specialist in incunables, worked in the National and University Library (later the Land nad University Library), in 1941 as a deputy of the Reichskommissar, and from 1942 to 1945 as the Reichskommissar. Correspondence, photographs, press cuttings, notes and works concerning palaeography and German incunables. Not yet filed.
Winter Lev, JUDr. [1902]-[1933]
Lev Winter (1876-1935), a lawyer, was an active member of labour movement, involved in politics for the Social Democratic Party. From 1907, he was a member of its board of directors, at the same year, he was elected a deputy for the Social Democratic Party in the Imperial Council and became a member of the Club of Czech Social Democratic Deputies. He worked in the Imperial Council until the end of the World War I. From the end of 1918, he was a member of the National Assembly. From 1918 to1920 and from 1925 to 1926, he was the Minister of Social Care. From 1929, he was a member of the Socialist International and a delegate for the Czechoslovak Republic to the League of Nations. As an eminent expert in the field of social insurance, he published his works in many Czechoslovak and foreign socialistic papers. The holding includes one carton of his manuscript works.
