How to become a user

Any citizen over the age of 15 can become a user of the National Library of the CR (NL). Except for the external loans, all users have access to the same range of services. Library services are provided after registration for and issue of a library card (always for a one-year period).

The registered users with a valid library card are allowed to :

  • Study printed materials held on open-access in the reading rooms (at the Scholars Reading Room in accordance with the specific regulations )
  • Search in the NL catalogues
  • Request printed and electronic documents and microfilms from the storage areas to the reading rooms
  • Use the Digital Library (Manuscriptorium, Kramerius, Webarchive)
  • Use Wi-fi network on their own laptops
  • Use reference and research services
  • Make photocopies (or print copies) of documents from the NL collections, Internet or of their own materials on self-service copy
  • Make use of photoduplication services provided to order from the documents requested previously for study from the store
  • Use Interlibrary Loan service
  • Use access to Internet
  • Search in the licensed databases
  • Read electronic books
  • Make use of external borrowing of documents from the designated parts of the NL collections (on the condition that the user presents a proof of permanent or long-term residency in the CR)

Registration must always be done in person at the Reader Registration Office in the Main Hall. To gain a library card you have to comply with the given conditions and pay the appropriate registration fee.

Potential users of  the NL services can apply for through the pre-registration that must be completed in person at the Reader Registration Office in the Main Hall.  The benefits to pre-registration are that you can request selected items which will be prepared for study after completing the registration.

Visitors, who wish to see the reading rooms (and especially wish to become acquainted with the provided services), may buy a one-day admission ticket. The visitors with a valid one-day admission ticket are allowed to:

  • Study printed materials available on open-access in the reading rooms (except for the Scholars Reading Room)
  • Search in the NL catalogues
  • Use the Digital Library (Manuscriptorium, Kramerius, Webarchive)
  • Use Wi-fi network on their own laptops
  • Use reference and research services
  • Make photocopies of their own materials or documents from the reference libraries on self-service copy machines
