Access to Archival Documents of the National Library of the Czech Republic Published from 1801 to the Present

Directive in writing

National Archival Collection - an archival collection of documents published on today´s territory of the Czech Republic (if need be Czechoslovakia) from 1901 up to the present and completed with foreign bohemical documents.
Archival Collection of the 19th Century – an archival collection of documents published on today´s territory of the Czech Republic (if need be Czechoslovakia) from 1801 up to 1900 and completed with foreign bohemical documents.
Selected Archival Collections - e.g. shelf mark 52, 60 (Vlček´s Library), 71 (Šalda´s Library), 72, 73, Diss D, Diss T, Kand, H + Roman numeral – militaria.


Library items kept in the aforementioned collections are available only exceptionally under the strict conditions of the special collection preservation restrictions, and only in rightful cases (see below). The items are issued as check-in loans either in the Hostivař Central Depository Reading Room or in the Scholars Reading Room, depending on the place of storage.


Loans to Users

Registered users (researchers), interested in studying any item included in the Library Archival Collections published from 1801 to the present, shall submit a duly completed request form at the Consultancy and Information Desk in the Main Hall of the National Library of the Czech Republic, located at the Klementinum. Authorized members of staff will check whether the request is rightful, i.e. whether the requested title is not accessible in other National Library Collections. The document on loan to another user is not considered to be inaccessible.
In case of the rightful request, the library item is delivered to and issued as a check-in loan in:

The delivery to and issue in other Reading Rooms is not possible.
Users may ask for the information about the processing of their request in the Main Hall or in the Scholars Reading Room, both at the Klementinum. The request for loan will be executed within three business days after submitting the duly completed request form. In the Hostivař Central Depository Reading Room, the items are reserved one month after submitting the completed request form or the user´s last visit. In the Scholars Reading Room, the items are reserved one week after the issue of the document or user´s last visit. If the user does not come to study within the period mentioned above, the reservation is cancelled. The number of library items issued for check-in loan and /or for reservation is limited to five units. In case of periodals, the number of items may be extended with prior permission from the Reading Room staff.


Shelf mark 71 (Šalda´s Library)
– unless the item included in the Šalda´s Library is the only copy in the collections of the National Library of the Czech Republic, it is made available only after submitting proof of the purpose of study of /research in F. X. Šalda (confirmation of University or other scientific institution and, if need be, proof of user´s publishing activity).


Exception:
In case of the request for loan submitted by a handicapped user, who cannot visit the Hostivař Central Depository, the item is delivered to the Scholars Reading Room, where it is available under the specific preservation restrictions.


Staff Loans to the National Library of the Czech Republic Staff Members

The rightful staff loans are considered those when it is necessary to compare different copies in the collections of the National Library of the Czech Republic with the purpose of the exact identification of the particular edition. The rightful staff loan is limited to five business days. A duly completed request form signed by the head of the particular department or division must always be submitted.
In other cases, the members of the National Library staff can borrow the documents, kept in the Library Archival Collections, under the same conditions as the regular users, regardless the fact that they need a requested title for their work. The units in the Library Archival Collections cannot be used to complete the reference libraries.
